The city of Bayreuth is the capital of Upper Franconia with a population of about 72,000 inhabitants. Bayreuth is famous for its annual music festival, the Bayreuth Festival in the Festival Theatre, where performances of operas by the 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner are presented. Bayreuth also offers the probably most beautiful preserved baroque theater with the Margravial Opera House, which belongs to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 2012, or besides other places also the Hermitage, one of the most important examples of German garden design.
Upper Frankonia is a region with one of the highest industrial concentration in Europe and the highest density of breweries in the world. It has also the attractive leisure and tourist areas, the Fichtel Mountains (Fichtelgebirge) and the Frankonian Switzerland (Fränkische Schweiz) (image movie), each at the distance of about 20 kilometers from Bayreuth.
